Printing & Production Techniques: Letterpress

For the next segment of our printing and production techniques series we will be discussing the 500-year-old art of letterpress. While printing by letterpress isn’t the most modern, efficient technique you can choose to use, it does add another, luxurious, dimension to your stationery.

Plush-Taylor-RSVP-map-postcard

Traditionally, letterpress worked by fixing raised metal typeset onto a letterpress plate… nowadays polymer plates can also be created with your choice of digital type and design. These plates are then pressed against paper to achieve raised lettering and tangibly beautiful results. Letterpress creates quality you can feel. It not only makes for visually gorgeous stationery, but also adds physical texture and depth. Another bonus of letterpress is that you don’t have to forfeit colour for the three dimensional appeal of letterpress. The letterpress plates can be inked during the printing process.

Letterpress is a true artisan craft. It takes plenty of time because each piece of paper is pressed separately. Naturally, this makes your stationery unique. The amount of time it takes to process an order of letterpress stationery and the one-of-a-kind quality of the work mean higher costs. If you desire the obvious quality and luxury of letterpress stationery, make sure to plan ahead regarding both the cost and the time needed complete your specialty stationery. At Plush we work with great letterpress artisans and are happy to collaborate with them to create your dream design.

Bridal Guide Calgary Feature

Bridal Guide Calgary’s latest issue was kind enough to showcase some of Plush’s work along with many other great vendors. We collaborated with a few of these vendors to create two very beautiful inspirational photo shoots.

huge-photography-0281T

The first design Plush is featured in was inspired by the warm yellow of citrine gem stones. The team (Mountain Bride Weddings & Events, Huge Photography, The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, Special Event Rentals, Celebration Creations, Flowers by Janie, and Cakes In Vogue) worked together, combining various hues of yellow, including gold, lemon, and canary, to showcase the versatility of the colour in the different elements of wedding décor. By combining yellow tones with rich golds, lush pinks, and soft peaches, the outcome was assured to be classy and inviting.

Plush interpreted this theme using Envelopments Lemon Meringue yellow combined with metallic off-white Quartz. Punches of soft peach and tangerine in the font mixed with metallic gold in the wax seal offset the yellow in a visually appealing way. The romantic design is all tied together with a beautiful ombré ribbon that fades pale yellow to cheery peach.

We’d love if you took a glance at the spread on page 20 of the current Bridal Guide Calgary issue!!

Font Friday: Asterism

Font is an extremely important element of stationery. Plenty of studies have shown that different fonts actually convey very specific personalities to the reader. That is why we are always on the hunt for beautiful fonts that will characterize your invitations perfectly.

Our latest font acquisition is Asterism, a lovely hand-written, calligraphy style font created by Molly Jacques Erickson and Dathan Boardman. Asterism is whimsically modern and lots of fun! We imagine this font being used for a more casual sort of invitation. Perhaps for a wedding with an outdoor venue and a relaxed, homespun vibe!

Printing & Production Techniques: Laser Cutting

The stationery world is so diverse. It melds old techniques with cutting edge technology to create stunning, innovative designs. With the right tools and a whole lot of creativity, there are really no limits to what can be done.

Here at Plush our standard method of printing is flat, laser printing, but we love collaborating with other vendors to create your perfect design. Please just make sure you leave ample production time (a minimum of 6-8 weeks) for us to collaborate on your specialty services!

Speaking of specialty services, over the next few weeks we’d like to introduce you to a variety of printing and production techniques that we like to incorporate into our designs. First up is laser cutting!

Laser Creative

We have to admit, since the National Stationery Show in May, we’ve been a bit obsessed with laser cutting. This technique is relatively new to the stationery world. Generally speaking, most people think laser cutting is an industrial process used for cutting sheet metal; however, this high-tech skill can be applied to other materials, like paper, too! The beautiful thing about laser cutting is how, when done well, it has gorgeous, sharp edges that allow your design to be detailed without looking sloppy. Whether you’re in the market for something intricate, like an art deco-style pattern, or something simple, like a cameo-style silhouette, laser cutting can help you achieve a super clean, precise design. Keep in mind that pricing is generally based on the amount of time it takes to cut each piece. Intricate designs will take more time, and therefore will be more costly.

Papel Couture

You have to be careful when choosing laser cutting as one of your production techniques. Because paper is such a delicate material, it has the tendency to burn or tear under the laser. Make sure you choose a vendor who really knows the products you wish to use. Laser cutting is truly an art form! Luckily, at Plush we can connect you with vendors who are definitely the cream of the crop!

Check out Papel Couture and Laser Creative for excellent examples of the wide variety of designs possible!

Let’s Get Away!

June’s warm days and late sunsets are setting the stage for a gorgeous summer. With thoughts of lush beaches, balmy weather, and lazy long weekends, Plush’s team has been experiencing quite a bit of wanderlust. Nothing says summer like a relaxing getaway amidst the steamy hustle and bustle of city life. Here at Plush we are passionate travellers of the world, so we thought we’d share one of our most beloved wedding themes this summer: travel.

Collage Travel

Is there anything more romantic than journeying somewhere new with someone you love? We don’t think so. With that notion in mind, we’ve created a summer inspiration board featuring some of our favourite travel-themed Plush designs.

Welcome, Klaire!

We’d like to introduce our new Production and Social Media Assistant, Klaire. She will be assisting Alissa with assembly and contributing to our blog on a regular basis!

KlaireAfter helping out with a few local weddings, Klaire knew she wanted to be more intimately involved with the wedding industry. She loves how all the different parts of weddings come together to make such beautiful, memorable events. This, combined with her passion for paper products of all kinds, makes this position a natural fit. Klaire especially loves invites because they are the very first impression an invitee is given about the main event. Beautiful invites and wedding stationery set the tone for a wedding; for Klaire there is nothing more exciting than checking the mailbox and receiving something made of rich, decadent paper with gorgeous text and colours.

Klaire also has a love for the written word -she loves writing and is ecstatic to put her English degree to use here on the Plush blog. She cannot wait to get started talking about all the exciting things going on with Plush this summer.

In her free time, Klaire loves to make travel plans, read Victorian literature, and try her hand at all sorts of DIY crafts.

Let the wedding season begin!

Color Inspiration – Indigo & Stem

One of our favorite classic color story inspirations: Indigo & Stem – cool nights, earthy influence, strong bold color, bold preppy feel balanced with soft natural elements.

Plush-invitations-mood-board-indigo-stem-600px

As interpreted by Plush – the Classic style of the “Pamela” invitations suite. A smooth cotton stock suite printed with bold indigo ink. It features a formal border surrounding a more playful script.
The set is finished off, by bringing in a natural element – in the form of a marble paper band.
